Architectural and Technical Consultancy for redevelopment of Mumbai CST Railway Station

> Description du projet

Consultancy for redevelopment of Mumbai CST railway station.

As part of a major upgradation initiative by the Government of India, the Ministry of Railways through its apex body: the Railway Board has undertaken to redevelop a few important railway stations in the country into world-class stations. Mumbai CST, being the first major railway station developed by the British the country towards the end of the 19th century is also one of the first stations identified by the ministry to be redeveloped into a world-class facility. To subsidize the investment, the government has decided to take the PPP route for the redevelopment.

Handling more that 1 million passengers daily, the station is one of the busiest stations in the world. The station operates almost 1200 suburban and about 50 long distance trains daily to serve this volume of passengers. Even at this rate, the trains are occupied to the crush load and the station is hard pressed for space and passenger amenities. The main building which houses the zonal headquarters of the railways is also a UNESCO world heritage centre.

Egis, along with its partner architectural firm is currently evolving strategies such as reconfiguration of the yard, improvement of operating parameters such as the headway, enlargement of platform area, grade separation of passenger flux, relocation of maintenance and parcel handling facilities to arrive at a design concept that addresses the needs of the station while seamlessly integrating the modern urban fabric with the historical context of the development.
