Upgrading of 4-lane highways of the North-South Corridor in Tamil Nadu

 

The project objective is to widen a 83km-section (flexible pavement) of the North-South Corridor (NS 42 & NS 43) in the State of Tamil Nadu to 4 lanes (divided carriageway). The project basically comprises the upgrading and construction of 4-lane highways with flexible pavements, flexible overlays over the existing pavement after widening, the construction of bridges and culverts, and the construction of high embankment/elevated structures along the existing highways including realignment and bypassess.

Conditions of contract: FIDIC with conditions of particular application, MORTH

The project was divided into the following 2 packages:

· NS-42 (TN) – 4 laning to km.120 of the Madurai to Kanyakumari section of the NH-7 & 4 lane bypass from km.142 to km.160 of the Tirunelveli to Kanyakumari section (new alignment for Tirunelveli town) NH-7, 40km, 4 lanes, pavement type: flexible.

Bypass details:

· 20.21km (from Km126/900 – Km130/600 & from Km149/600 – Km169/309)

· Major Bridge/Structure details:

· No. of major bridges/structure: 5

· 4-lane major bridge at Ch. km127/450, bridge length: 120m, span arrangment: 12 spans of 6 X 20m.

· 4-lane major bridge at Ch. km129/674, bridge length: 220m, span arrangement: 22 spans of 11 X 20m

· additional 2-lane major bridge at Ch. km131/168, bridge length: 90m, span arrangement: 5 spans of 4 X 20m & 1 X 10m

· additional 2-lane major bridge at Ch. km139/013, bridge length: 196.5m, span arragenment: 8 spans of 7 X 26.2m & 1 X 13.1m

· 4-lane major bridge at Ch. km153/250, bridge length: 220m, span arrangement: 22 spans of 11 X 20m

· No. of flyovers: 1

 

Flyover at Ch. km159/000 span arrangement: 18 spans of 7 x 20m & 2 x 30m, total length: 200m

· NS-43 (TN) – 4 laning from Km160 to Km203 of the Tirunelveli to Kanyakumari section NH-7, 43km, 4 lanes, pavement type: flexible

· Bridge length: 64.2m, span arrangement 3 x 21.4, cast in site T beam deck slab, Well foundation at Ch. km196+834 (Nambiyar).

Project Management Services

 

Egis Bceom International, in joint venture with AARVEE, was awarded the contract for the following:

 

· reviewing the Detailed Project Report,

· construction supervision for proper implementation of the project within the time schedule,

· reviewing the concrete & bituminous mix designs,

· approving the contractor's work programme, resource allocation and safety precautions, handing over of the site, setting-up of supervisory and quality control systems,

· quality control and certification of interim payments,

· preparing the monthly progress reports,

· preparing the variation orders,

· checking the as-built drawings,

· preparing the contract completion reports,

· certifying payments in terms of quality and quantity,

· ensuring the project planning, monitoring, reporting and financial management,

· reviewing the safety plan & its implementation,

· identifying training needs and preparation of training programme,

on-the-job training and training assessment.
